Corazon Watkins

I was born in the Philippines and became an American citizen in 1976. I received my Master’s Degree in Fine Arts at the University of Oklahoma in 1990. I worked as an adjunct professor at the University of Oklahoma Ceramic Department, but after one year of teaching, I realized that my passion was working with my art and not in academia. I have been a full-time artist for more than twenty years. Today, I maintain my studio in Norman, Oklahoma.

I work in different discipline: painting, mixed-media, and installation. My works explore the realms of reality in our society: intolerance, injustice, political, and religious issues. And some are more personal reminiscing nostalgic memories of my past: my Filipino heritage, family, friends and the beautiful, tropical island I left behind.

I exhibited regionally in the United States and in Europe and a recipient of several awards including an NEA Endowment in 200l and an Excellence in Art Award in 1997 sponsored by the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition (OVAC).

In 2000, I started attending artist residencies both in the United States, Costa Rica and in Europe through scholarships and endowment. In 2006, Foundation Valparaiso, an artist colony in Elmiria, Spain offered me my first European exhibition at the Galleria Monte in Mojacar, Spain.

Today, I live in Norman with my husband and two daughters, Shawn and Robyn. When I am not working with my arts, I enjoy going to antique and garage sales with my husband, Robert, hunting interesting items for installation projects. Spending quality time with my daughters is a cherished moment.
