Sue Schofield
"Nature has always been my foundation and the inspiration for my paintings. The sculptural qualities of earth and stone create organic shapes both in the landscape and in many man-built features. Rock and wood come from the earth and return to it. I use diagonal elements to indicate this continual process of transformation. Water flows across and down and below, carrying both generative and destructive forces with it. These elements draw me to explore them in my paintings. Recently, however, I have begun to experiment with cloudscapes and simple still life paintings. In these works, a central mass is the core of the painting, which is a statement of presence rather than of transformation".
Sue Schofield began to paint seriously after her retirement from OU’s College of Liberal Studies where she managed an interdisciplinary masters’ degree program. She has worked in some form of public education most of her life including time as an interpretive ranger with the National Park Service and as a museum educator. A temporary position at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art and her years there as a docent increased her interest in art until she began to sculpt and paint a few years before her retirement.
